Job Description

Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) supports Johns Hopkins’ focus on research, teaching and patient care, and its role as a national and global leader in higher education. We create and foster enduring relationships that result in advocacy and philanthropic support for Johns Hopkins University & Medicine—strengthening the institution through partnerships with donors, alumni, volunteer leaders, faculty, students, staff, and patients.


The Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine (FJHM) is the dedicated development and alumni relations team supporting the entities that comprise Johns Hopkins Medicine (JHM), including clinical departments, hospitals, satellite clinics, and the School of Medicine. We contribute to Johns Hopkins Medicine’s mission of patient care, research, and education through securing philanthropy, building and maintaining donor and alumni relationships, and supporting institutional priorities. FJHM partners closely with institutional leaders, faculty, and clinicians to engage alumni, patients, donors, and prospects in JHM’s work to advance medicine and improve the human condition.


The Sr. Director of Development for School of Medicine (SOM), SOM Alumni Relations, and Office of Medical Annual Giving (OMAG) provides strategic leadership and vision to carry forward institutional priorities. This position is responsible for strategic guidance of each team and will plan, manage, and coordinate all private sector fundraising in support of the mission along with engagement and programs for alumni of the School of Medicine.


This position will have a dual reporting relationship to the Assistant Vice President of The Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine and the Vice Dean of Education for the School of Medicine. It has several direct reports with a layered team. Overall, the Sr. Director of SOM Development, SOM Alumni Relations, and OMAG plays a crucial role in advancing the fundraising and alumni engagement efforts of the School of Medicine to support its mission of excellence in medical education.


Key responsibilities: 

  • Plan and oversee current and future fundraising strategy and campaigns for SOM Development, principal and major giving, corporate and foundation giving, planned giving, annual giving, direct mail, communications, and stewardship.
  • Oversee a major gift fundraising team raising approximately $10-13M per fiscal year.
  • Manage a balanced portfolio of 75-100 individuals and an annual goal of $2-2.5M with a demonstrated capacity for principal and major gifts, drawn from alumni, faculty, friends, parents, former patients, trustees, medical arts and others who are prospects for the philanthropic opportunities that Johns Hopkins Medicine can offer.
  • Partnering with SOM leadership to create strategy for and identify fundraising priorities and ensure success in the upcoming institution-wide fundraising campaign.
  • Collaborate with Development leaders in Johns Hopkins Medicine clinical departments to engage and solicit faculty, house staff and fellows.
  • Direct the SOM’s alumni relations program that involves engaging more than 20,000 graduates, former residents, fellows, post-docs and faculty. Provide strategic direction regarding programming, engagement activities and fundraising efforts, with the goal of fostering and maintaining positive relations that will ultimately lead to the growth of Johns Hopkins Medicine.
  • Manage the SOM Alumni Council, the alumni volunteer board for the school which meets regularly and provides volunteer support, advocacy and advice for the school.
  • Provide leadership and strategic direction over the annual School of Medicine Reunion and Alumni Weekend. Oversee the execution of programming for the 400+ attendees.
  • Work with gift officers and annual giving team to create annual workplans; meet throughout the year to discuss progress and strategies. Serve as a mentor and coach for all team members.
  • Staff and collaborate with faculty members such as the Vice Dean of Education, Director of the Department of the History of Medicine, Director of the Simulation Center, Director of the Primary Care Leadership Track and Director of the Global Health Leadership Track.
  • Supervise and oversee the leader for the Medical Annual Giving team in developing the strategy and implementation of the annual giving program for Johns Hopkins Medicine, including 23 clinical departments, two institutes, the School of Medicine degree granting programs, and three partner hospitals to generate more than 750,000 individual solicitations and raise $3.5-$4 million annually from 15,000 donors.
  • Provide strategic oversight to OMAG on creating and implementing a strategy to provide a consistent and reliable pipeline of major gift donor prospects to JHM departments and partner hospitals.
  • Other duties as assigned.






Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree
  • 7 years related experience including at least 2 years of management experience


Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong track record of successfully soliciting and managing major and principal gifts, preferably in higher education.
  • Understand and articulate academic values/goals, and work collaboratively with faculty, administration, students, alumni, donors and volunteer leadership
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Capable of articulating complex institutional viewpoints, goals and needs.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing advisory boards and volunteer leadership.
  • Organizational management and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability and willingness to travel.
