The College of Literature, Science, and the Arts and the Department of Slavic Languages & Literatures at the University of Michigan invite applications for a LEO Lecturer I to teach two courses in East European Literature and Culture at a 33.33% or 66.66% effort for the Winter 2025 term, January 1 - April 30, 2025. The candidate must be qualified and prepared to teach one course on Central European Cinema, as well as teaching writing, and topics of race and ethnicity to undergraduate students.

Responsibilities*

Responsibilities will include teaching Slavic 312, Central European Cinema, lectures (Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2:00 - 3:00 PM) and one discussion section (Thursdays, 3:00 - 4:00 PM), managing four Graduate Student Instructors, and evaluating and offering advice for improvement on three papers and two rewrites of papers. In addition to being the lead instructor for Slavic 312, there may be an opportunity to teach another course on East European Literature or Culture, pending administrative approval and experience. The lecturer will also be required to hold office hours on campus weekly for at least 2 hours, attend and plan weekly meetings with graduate student instructors, and maintain regular contact with students through email. All meetings and teaching are in-person.

Required Qualifications*

Requirements for this position include a record of teaching excellence at the undergraduate level, the ability to work with a diverse student body and with very diverse assignments, compatible availability with the lectures, screenings and discussion sections and an interest in the development and application of innovative instructional methods. 

Ph.D. in Slavic Studies, Writing, Literature, Film or Comparative Literature is required, as well as prior teaching at a North American institution of higher learning specifically with experience teaching a Central European film course.

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
