Job Summary

The following is a job posting for a Financial or Business Analyst Intermediate position at the University of Michigan Survey Research Center.

The Survey Research Center (SRC) has been a national and international leader in interdisciplinary social science research involving the collection of data from scientific sample surveys. SRC is part of the Institute for Social Research (ISR), and the Survey Research Operations (SRO) is the operations branch of the SRC.

SRO provides many services in survey and statistical design, data collection and processing, and data analysis. SRO provides these services to clients from SRC, to other departments within the University, and to researchers and organizations outside the University. Within SRO, staff members work on projects across a variety of substantive areas, using leading survey methodology and project management techniques, and state-of-the-art technical systems.

You will be part of the SRO Finance Group, reporting to the Financial Analyst Lead or the Finance Group Director. After a period of orientation, it is possible to request a hybrid schedule with at least three days per week worked on site.

Responsibilities*

25%    Perform data analysis for projects or department on a variety of financial related topics such as payroll, human resources, revenue, and procurement. Conduct routine and ad hoc analyses on a specific project and across projects and department. Query and summarize datasets for project managers. Monitor the general accounting of project accounts and initiate appropriate corrections. Monitor overall account balance on projects and status of invoice payments. Communicate with project team on project spending requirements such as carryforward restrictions, smoothing and small business spending requirements.

25%    Enter and maintain project level budget and projection data in department cost reporting system. Provide standard and customized reports to managers. Perform projection analysis using cost data from past projects, budget assumptions and current work scope assumptions. Create accurate projections of project future expense.

25%    Initiate the set-up of account structures to support the required level of data needed to perform analysis. Monitor the active status of accounts and process account closeout. Maintain an archive of financial documents as related to sponsored projects. Provide information as requested promptly to financial operations.

15%    Conduct audits of financial transactions, reconcile multiple department accounting processes and initiate corrections. Review proposals and take appropriate action based on specific sponsor requirements. Monitor proposal budget allocations against MPathways Budget Ledger budget allocation. Maintain department's multiple reconciliation processes and perform necessary accounting corrections. Also responsible for various financial reports and controls.

10%    Some finance database maintenance support.

Required Qualifications*

B.A. degree in a field related to business or finance, and 2-5 years of experience with an emphasis in either accounting or finance or an equivalent combination of work experience and education.

Demonstrated competency with Excel (can perform complex functions) and database software to perform financial reporting and management.

Demonstrated ability to work with staff at all levels with varying degrees of financial management experience.

Desired Qualifications*

1+ years of experience performing financial analysis in a project-based environment.

1+ years of experience with database design and query writing.

Detailed knowledge of University financial processes.

Detailed knowledge of University financial data warehouse or large-scale financial data sets.

Work Locations

This position requires being on-site at the University of Michigan offices in Ann Arbor, If the project tasks assigned, job performance, and SRC policy allow, the option for a hybrid schedule including limited off-site work may be available after an initial period of orientation.

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.
