Research Technologist

Job Description

The Johns Hopkins University Department of Genetic Medicine is seeking a Research Technologist who will work with a team that includes other technicians, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows. Under the general supervision of a faculty investigator and other laboratory members, the successful candidate will be responsible for performing experiments and analysis. Work requires the basic use of scientific methods and procedures and techniques gained through previous training and experience. The position requires a basic understanding of the theory behind experiments and the application of analytical skills to implement assigned projects, and to identify and trouble-shoot situations needing special attention. The successful applicant is one who has the ability to work well with a team of lab scientists as well as independently.


Special Duties & Responsibilities

  • The primary duties include, but are not limited to, independently performing routine cell culture and experiments and contributing to the general maintenance of the lab, supplies and equipment.
  • Use basic science knowledge to learn techniques/methods of the lab.
  • Performs laboratory experiments by following common protocols or with instruction.
  • This may require sterile cell culture aseptic techniques.
  • May also require techniques associated with molecular biology.
  • Must operate basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuge, pH meter, analytical balance, spectrophotometer, light microscope, and utilizes laminar flow hood.
  • Operates lab computers for data entry and extraction.
  • Will prepare cell culture media and associated reagents and growth factors.
  • Will carry out cell culture experiments, maintain, cryopreserve, and catalogue various cell culture lines as per protocol.
  • Prepares tissue culture cells for study utilizing histochemical techniques.
  • Maintains accurate data records.
  • Prepares solutions, reagents, and stains following standard laboratory formulas and procedures.
  • Monitors inventory levels, orders material and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures, counts orders upon receipt.
  • As the lab mainly studies patient-derived human iPS cells that requires everyday maintenance.
  • The employee will need to work on weekends (2.5 hours per day) for the essential human pluripotent cell culture maintenance.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience.

 


 

Classified Title: Research Technologist 
Role/Level/Range: ACRO40/E/02/CC  
Starting Salary Range: $15.70 - $26.25 HRLY ($43,680 targeted; Commensurate with experience) 
Employee group: Full Time 
Schedule: M-F, 7 hrs per day, S-S, 2.5 hrs per day (varies) 
Exempt Status: Non-Exempt
