Job Summary

University of Michigan Operating Room (OR) and Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) employees are committed to contributing to an exceptional experience for each patient and family. Ensuring a patient and family centered experience according to the Health Systems Service Excellence Goals is a priority in the care of our patients. The individual chosen for this position will be responsible for meeting the highest standards of customer service including exhibiting a professional and positive image when interacting with patients, faculty and staff. This is a clerical float position for the Operating/Recovery Rooms Department. The candidate will learn all clerical areas (Family Waiting/Check-In, PreOp, Recovery, OR Front Desk and Billing/Scheduling) to provide absentee coverage and other coverage as needed. This coverage may be planned in advance but last minute changes also occur.

Responsibilities*

The overarching role of our team is to support patients and families through the surgical day and to execute clinical tasks enabling medical providers to spend the most time with the patient. The Operating Room Front Desk (ORFD), PreOp and PACU clerical roles are largely ‘behind the scenes’ positions, assisting and coordinating the people, equipment, schedules, etc. that enable smooth operations in and around the operating rooms. The Check-In and Family Waiting staff act as communication liaisons between clinicians and family members by relaying important information in addition to checking patients in for surgery or procedures.

Work Schedule

This is a floating position and as such the schedule varies. During training, the schedule will vary between days and nights as each of the desks and each of the shifts are learned. 

There are mandatory meetings and trainings that will be announced in advance and may be outside of the typical work schedule.

Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
