About the Department

The Precision Sustainable Agriculture program is a network of researchers across the country collaborating to develop integrated knowledge-intensive sustainable agriculture practices into a precision framework to maximize farm productivity, and sustainability through the use of an information ecology that connects farms, data, tools, and people for optimal, real-time decision making. The department’s mission is to develop future leaders in crop, soil and environmental sciences, improve crop plants and products, devise effective and sustainable crop production systems devise effective and sustainable soil mangemen techniques in both agriculture and urban settings; and disseminate crop, soil, and environmental science knowledge for the benefit of users and producers of food, feed turf, biofuels and fiber in North Carolina, the nation and the world.

Essential Job Duties

The Research Technician will assist with research activities and provide support for both field and laboratory operations within the organic grains program and its graduate students.

Key Responsibilities:
  •  General field maintenance, including:
  •  Field design
  •  Pesticide application
  •  Fencing and weeding
  •  Collecting plant and soil samples
Data support and analysis, which includes:
  •  Drying, weighing, and grinding grain, plant, and soil samples
  •  Analyzing grain and plant samples
  •  Conducting laboratory analysis of plant and soil samples
  •  Photography for documentation of field and laboratory research
Work Schedule:
  •  Approximately 40% of the time will be spent on campus, and 60% at field sites (subject to change).
  •  Daily working hours may vary, especially during peak seasons.

This position is stationed at BARC – Beltsville Agricultural Research Center in Beltsville, MD and is a time-limited position for one year.

Long hours driving to research locations, and some equipment maintenance

Minimum Experience/Education

Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Agronomy, Soil Science, or a related field.
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Accountability for assigned tasks
  • Exceptional organizational skills
  • Field research experience in agriculture

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in agronomy, soil science, or related field.
  • Experience handling chemicals, fertilizers, or pesticides
  • Data management skills and experience in Microsoft Excel
  • Ability to transport a team or equipment to rural, off-campus locations

Required License or Certification

  • A valid Driver’s License and the ability to obtain a Driver’s License within 60 days of hire.
  • A valid Driver’s License must be maintained throughout employment.
